On November 6, CMS approved the District of Columbia’s Section 1115 Medicaid Behavioral Health Transformation Demonstration Program, expanding services for individuals diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI), serious emotional disturbance (SED), or substance use disorder (SUD). This program is a “first-of-its-kind,” as it combines both an expansion of services for beneficiaries diagnosed with SMI or SED, as well as those diagnosed with SUD. The program will also support the District in providing care to those who are experiencing homelessness who have SMI or SUD, and have long been unable to gain access to needed services.
