VA Announces Delays in Expansion of Caregiver Benefits Program

The VA recently announced plans to extend the deadline for expanding the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC).  Currently, eligibility for PCAFC is limited to caregivers of veterans seriously injured in the line of duty on or after September 10, 2001.  However, the Mission Act, passed in 2018, provides for expansion of the program to caregivers of veterans injured prior to September 10, 2001.  The VA previously hoped to roll out the expansion in the fall of 2019, but blames required technology upgrades for the delay.   The first wave of expansion, affecting caregivers of veterans seriously injured in the line of duty on or before May 7, 1975, will be implemented in the summer of 2020.  Enrollment for caregiver benefits for veterans injured between May 7, 1975 and September 10, 2001, is not expected to begin until 2022.
