Lawmakers in Michigan are drawing criticism for a last-minute provision inserted into the 2020 state budget that could privatize mental health services. This provision would permit Medicaid plans to “contract with providers outside of the current community mental health system”. This change will merge Medicaid managed care plans for physical health with the mental health system. Supporters believe this integration will provide for better overall care for Medicaid patients, while advocates and community mental health agencies and organizations opposing the provision fear Medicaid managed care plans, with little experience in mental health services, will “cut corners to save costs.''
