On October 21, prescription drug distributors McKesson Corp., AmerisourceBergen, and Cardinal Health, along with drug manufacturer Teva Pharmaceuticals, agreed to a $260 million settlement with Cuyahoga and Summit Counties just hours before a landmark trail in the opioid multidistrict litigation (MDL) was set to begin. The agreement requires the three distributors to pay a total of $215 million to the counties, to be used for addiction treatment and prevention programs. Teva will pay an additional $20 million to the counties and will also provide $25 million worth of medications for opioid treatment. Although this agreement only applies to the cases brought by the two Ohio counties, on same day four state attorneys general separately announced the framework of a potential $48 billion settlement agreement to resolve the remaining lawsuits in the MDL.
