House Committee Focuses on Private Equity Firms to Combat Surprise Medical Billing

On September 16, 2019, leaders of the Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives launched an investigation into the role that private equity firms play in patients receiving surprise medical bills. Surprise medical billing, such as unexpected, high-dollar out-of-network bills, continues to garner national attention and has prompted bi-partisan legislative action at the federal and state levels. The Committee’s investigation is initially focused on three private equity firms that own physician staffing companies. The Committee is requesting a variety of information from these firms, including the amount of money these firms derive from their physician staffing companies, as well as the portion of such money that is attributable to out-of-network billing.
