The FDA has started an investigation on whether e-cigarettes can cause severe respiratory disease and seizures. The FDA has not been able to confirm that the seizures reported are directly linked to the use of a specific brand, but it has reported 127 seizures or other neurological symptoms linked to e-cigarettes from 2010 to 2019. Further, patient reports of symptoms, including breathing difficulty, shortness of breath, and/or chest pain before hospitalization have led to the CDC being involved in the investigations. The FDA will be working with state and local officials following the death of an adult in Illinois who had been hospitalized with a severe respiratory illness following the use of an e-cigarette product.
