Following several mass shootings this week, President Trump and many lawmakers focused their rhetoric on mental illness and access to guns, calling for more states to pass red flag laws. According to a U.S Secret Service report released in July on mass shootings in 2018; however, there was “no single profile” that could be found to predict who would commit these acts, specifically stating that “mental illness, alone, is not a risk factor.” Mental health experts, in an article released by the Associated Press, agreed that red flag laws have helped, but gun ownership is a “better predictor” of mass shootings.
