On August 19, 2019, Ayodeji Temitayo Fatunmbi was sentenced to almost 4 years in prison and ordered to pay over $1 million in restitution for his participation in a Medicare kickback scheme involving DME. Fatunmbi pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, admitting that he and others had paid cash kickbacks to patient recruiters and physicians for fraudulent DME prescriptions. The physicians prescribed equipment, such as power wheelchairs to Medicare beneficiaries who had no legitimate medical need.
