DOJ Announces Largest Opioid Case Recovery

On July 11, 2019, the DOJ announced a $1.4 billion settlement with Reckitt Benckiser Group plc (RB Group), resolving criminal and civil liability for the marketing of Suboxone, an opioid drug used by recovering opioid addicts. This is the largest settlement reached by the federal government in a case relating to opioids, which includes $647 million in forfeiture, $700 million in civil settlements with the federal and multiple state governments, and a $50 million administrative resolution with the FTC. The claims against RB Group alleged schemes to increase prescriptions of Suboxone by providing misleading information about product benefits and to prevent generic competition for important medicines.
