Heaviest Drinkers Comprise Bulk of Alcohol Sales

The Recovery Research Institute described research on the impact of harmful and hazardous drinkers in England on alcohol sales.  In 2013-2014, an estimated 77% of alcohol was sold to people who drank excessively. A relatively small group of harmful drinkers (4% of the total population) consumed almost one third of all alcohol sold in England and accounted for 23% of all alcohol sales revenue.  These findings are believed to be consistent with other countries, including the U.S., and call into question the willingness of the alcohol industry to invest in and support meaningful solutions for addressing alcohol-related problems including addiction.
