OIG’s Report on National Background Check Program for LTC Providers

The National Background Check Program for LTC Providers provides grants to help participating states develop systems to perform better employee background checks to keep CMS beneficiaries safer in the LTC environment. OIG has recently issued a report evaluating various state programs concluded between 2013 and 2016. The study reviewed data compiled from eight of ten participating states and found that background checks resulted in determinations of ineligibility for prospective employees with a range of less than 1% to 8%, with the highest percentages in Alaska, Florida, Illinois, and New Mexico. To better protect beneficiaries from potential harm, OIG’s report recommends that CMS expand its assistance to encourage greater participation from states to fully implement Program requirements.
