Strengthening the Health Care Fraud Prevention Task Force Act of 2019

A new bipartisan bill would codify and potentially augment public-private partnership aimed at healthcare fraud and abuse detection. H.R.525, titled Strengthening the Health Care Fraud Prevention Task Force Act of 2019, provides for government oversight and protection of collected data by a Healthcare Fraud Prevention Partnership (“HFPP”). HFPP is a voluntary public-private partnership that enables data sharing among private insurers. Both private and public advocates of the bill urge it will increase overall participation and reinforce participating healthcare institutions' ability to detect and halt fraud and abuse. However, opponents argue that allowing federal intrusion into private and state detection efforts is unnecessary and inappropriate. The bill passed the House by a voice vote on February 25, 2019.  The Senate referred the bill to the Committee on Finance.
