On Friday, June 6, 2025, President Trump signed a new executive order, EO14306, repealing some provisions under EO 14144 and EO 13694, issued by former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Previously, under EO 14144, federal contractors were required to submit technical data and attestations as support for the security of their software. The new order removes this requirement, in addition to digital identity mandates, according to a fact sheet issued with the EO.
The new EO also instructs federal agencies to implement strategies to bolster the nation’s cybersecurity, such as broadening applications of artificial intelligence to identify vulnerabilities, updating federal software patching standards by September 2025, and establishing a consortium to guide secure software development by August 2025. The EO also specifically mentions China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran as threats to U.S. cybersecurity.
