On May 13, 2025, Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of insurance company UnitedHealthcare and healthcare services company Optum, stepped down, citing personal reasons. He will be succeeded by Stephen Hemsley, who served as CEO from 2006-2017. In a statement issued by UnitedHealth Group, the company also suspended its 2025 outlook, explaining that “care activity continued to accelerate while also broadening to more types of benefit offerings than seen in the first quarter, and the medical costs of many Medicare Advantage beneficiaries new to UnitedHealthcare remained higher than expected.” The company also noted that it “expects to return to growth in 2026.”
