Psilocybin, a hallucinogenic chemical produced by psychedelic mushrooms, has been decriminalized in Oregon and Colorado already and could soon be used in Iowa to treat mental health conditions like PTSD under Iowa Legislature House File 978. The bill seeks to establish a licensing board and operation requirements for establishments producing psilocybin as well as a registration process for agents of such establishments. Additionally, facilities cultivating psilocybin will have to abide by various growing, sales, and labeling requirements. As passed, the bill allows qualified providers to recommend psilocybin after a thorough assessment of a patient that is at least 21 years old who the qualified provider has met in person.
