The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of New York, announced that an 87-year-old man was sentenced to one year of probation and must register as a sex offender after grabbing and verbally accosting a nursing student providing nursing care at the Stratton VA Medical Center in February 2024.

Assault against healthcare providers, and in particular nurses, has surged nationally. A survey conducted by National Nurses United (NNU), the nation’s largest union and professional association for registered nurses, found that eight in 10 nurses (81.6%) experienced at least one type of workplace violence in the past year. Nurses report multiple types of workplace violence occurring on a daily basis, with the most common types being verbal threats, physical threats, and being pinched or scratched.
