A federal grand jury indicted a Chesapeake hospital on charges accusing the facility of health care fraud and conspiracy relating to unnecessary surgeries performed by one of its former surgeons. The charging document claims that the hospital granted privileges to the physician despite knowing his privileges had been terminated by another hospital for performing unnecessary surgeries and that he had been convicted of two federal felonies in 1996. The indictment alleges that the hospital collected millions in reimbursements related to the unnecessary procedures performed by the physician, including routinely scheduled unnecessarily early baby deliveries on Saturdays. Hospital officials denied any wrongdoing and said the facility “is dedicated to patient safety, prioritizing high-quality care that meets rigorous national standards[.]”
