A rocky relationship has developed between newer technology, including digital health and social media, and healthcare. All forms of technology may present potential privacy risks when not used carefully, but considerate use can actually enhance a healthcare organization’s standing and drive better connections with current or potential patients. Lessons from past experience on what not to do, can assist in crafting a strategy. Understanding regulatory constraints is a necessary starting point, after which an organization can start running. The landscape has changed even more during the COVID-19 emergency, with many requirements being waved, which could provide a preview of permanent changes to come.
