Your Success, Our Mission. That is the tagline of the Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division of the American Bar Association. Our Division is the national voice for solo, small firm, and general practice lawyers, including military and government lawyers. You received this edition of GPSolo magazine because you are one of our 25,895 members. Thank you for trusting our Division to be your legal partner. Our Division looks forward to working with you to achieve legal excellence in our profession because your success is our mission.

My name is Melody Wilkinson from Fort Worth, Texas, and I am proud to be the Chair-Elect of this Division. I am also pleased to be following in the footsteps of our Chair, Judge Henry Hamilton III, who is leading our Division during this 2023–2024 Bar Year. I want to thank Judge Hamilton for kindly allowing me the opportunity to write The Chair’s Corner column in his stead for this issue of GPSolo magazine.

I am truly honored and humbled to have the opportunity to serve you when I step into the role of GPSolo Division Chair later this year. Through the years, our Division has been a beacon of innovation and resilience, championing the interests of solo and small firm practitioners across the nation. As we embark on this new journey together, I am excited to continue this tradition of excellence and lead our Division into a future defined by collaboration, adaptability, and forward-thinking strategies.

Empowering Members

In the face of evolving challenges and opportunities, it is imperative that we, as legal professionals, remain agile and open to change. The legal landscape is constantly shifting, and our ability to embrace innovation will be the key to our success. Whether it’s harnessing the power of technology to streamline our practices, exploring new avenues for client engagement, or advocating for policies that support the needs of solo and small firm practitioners, we must be proactive in our approach to navigating the complexities of our profession.

My vision for the coming year is clear: to empower our members to thrive in an ever-changing legal environment. This means providing resources and support to help you stay ahead of the curve, fostering a sense of community where ideas can flourish, and advocating for policies that promote inclusivity and diversity in our profession, recognizing the unique perspectives and contributions of attorneys of all backgrounds. Together, we can shape the future of the legal profession and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those we serve.

By continuing to foster a sense of camaraderie and support among Division members and encouraging collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and mentorship, our Division will continue to grow with your active participation. Our Division will continue to provide resources, educational opportunities, and support to help solo practitioners and small firm attorneys enhance their skills, expand their knowledge, and achieve their professional goals. Our Division will also have a renewed focus on technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, to aid the solo and small firm practitioner.

We also remain committed to wellness issues. Recognizing the importance of wellness and well-being, including work-life balance, is essential to achieve harmony and fulfillment in both our professional and personal lives. You can expect to see events and sessions devoted to these topics during the 2024–2025 Bar Year.

Upcoming Meetings

Our Fall 2024 Leadership and Governance Meeting will take place October 15 and 16, 2024, at the picturesque Royal Sonesta Resort in Kauai, Hawaii. Specially negotiated room rates starting at $329 per night will be made available. Virtual participation will also be available. This event promises to be an invaluable opportunity for legal professionals such as yourself to engage in discussion, exchange insights, and network with peers. While the emphasis is on governance, we are planning to host a continuing legal education program devoted to embracing advancements in technology, including artificial intelligence, to enhance our efficiency and productivity. Although we are still working out the details for our welcome dinner event on Tuesday, October 15, what trip to Hawaii would be complete without a Hawaiian luau?

The GPSolo Division is particularly excited to be partnering with the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) for the Section Conference to be held at the Capital Hilton, Washington, D.C., May 7 to 10, 2025. Judge J. Michelle Childs of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals will receive the 2025 Liberty Achievement Award, presented by Thomson Reuters, on the evening of May 8, 2025, at a reception and dinner. Attendees with five lawyers or fewer in their law firm will receive discounted registration pricing for this conference. The conference will have six panels directed specifically at solo and small firm practitioners, with an emphasis on technology. We are also working on other special events for you and your family, including a special tour of the Pentagon.

The ABA will hold its 2025 Midyear Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, with Division meetings to take place from January 30 to February 1, 2025; the ABA 2025 Annual Meeting will be held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with Division meetings to take place from August 7 to August 9, 2025. Our Division will not only conduct its governance meetings at the Midyear and Annual Meetings but also will host special networking events, as well as our traditional military luncheon and awards program honoring our military. Our Division will continue our history of having an energetic speaker at our popular Women’s Initiative Network (WIN) event held at the Midyear Meeting. While you are in Phoenix, take advantage of your time to explore the vibrant culture, culinary scene, and natural beauty of the Southwest. While you are in Toronto, enjoy one of the most multicultural cities in the world, offering a blend of cultures, languages, and cuisines from around the globe.

These meetings provide a fantastic opportunity for GPSolo members to network with peers, gain valuable insights from industry leaders, and stay updated on the latest legal trends and developments. Don’t miss out on any of these enriching experiences, which can greatly benefit your practice and professional growth. Your participation at any or all of our gatherings will contribute significantly to the vibrant exchange of ideas and strategies aimed at enhancing our profession. Together, we can navigate the evolving landscape of legal practice and empower each other for success. Please mark your calendars and make plans to join us for what will be memorable and enriching events. Further details regarding registration and schedules will be provided in the future.
