Building a Practice: Just Say No to Free Consultations

You have just spent the whole day doing free consultations, business is booming! But, while several potential clients said they were interested, no one retained you to help with their problem. No problem, you are sure they will call back and sign the fee agreement at a later date. Even the ones who said they really could not afford an attorney. They will surely figure out that they need you and find money, right?

Charging for consultations is one of those controversial topics that lawyers tend to either love or hate. As a bankruptcy attorney, I always heard, “you have to do free consultations because everyone else does and the clients will just go to the lawyer down the street.” Fear not, you want the clients who want (or need) free consultations to go down the street!
