Pursuant to statute, the IRS has contracted with four private collection agencies to collect overdue federal tax accounts. In light of ongoing scams and fraud by those posing as private collection firms, the IRS is now sending written notification to taxpayers with overdue taxes, and also making telephone calls. The written notice will provide the name and contact information for the private collection agency. If a valid power of attorney is on file, the tax representative will receive a copy of this letter as well.
