On June 26th, the Supreme Court recognized a constitutional right to marriage equality for same-sex couples throughout the United States. In Obergefell v. Hodges, 576 U.S. ___ (2015), Justice Stevens stated that the Constitution grants same-sex couples the equal dignity of marriage under the law. The Court’s opinion completes a rapid legal transformation that began slightly more than a decade ago when the Massachusetts Supreme Court first granted same-sex couples the right to marry in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, 798 N.E.2d 941 (Mass. 2003).
