South Carolina Supreme Court Debars Florida Lawyer

Joseph A. Corsmeier
Editor's Note: I want to thank Mr. Corsmeier for sending this article. While at first blush it may seem to be state-specific and therefore not the general type of article I would publish, nevertheless it covers something that occurs everyday where an attorney handles something across state lines for someone and is not licensed in the state where the service was rendered.  Sure I know the ABA model rules would allow someone to practice across state lines (basically, you go where the client wants you to go), but many of our states have not adopted that provision. Until they do, I recommend you review the law of the state you are going to determine if you can do whatever you are being retained to do.

Best wishes to all,

Jim Schwartz
