Within a few years of its founding, Clearview AI amassed more than 3 billion images of people by “scraping” Facebook, YouTube, Venmo, and millions of other websites. As the New York Times reported, the massive database and a proprietary app allowed customers to upload a photo of anyone’s face and receive dozens, sometimes hundreds, of “matches” (Kashmir Hill, “The Secretive Company That Might End Privacy as We Know It,” New York Times, January 18, 2020).
