Three years out of law school, with a background in real estate and finance, I applied my skill set as in-house corporate general counsel to a company in the food industry. In a small legal department, I was immediately given responsibility for a multiplicity of divisions—general operations, purchasing, agricultural operations, industrial vegetable oil purchase and sales, product development, supply chain, government regulations, distribution, retail and food service sales, marketing, R&D operations, human resources, plant management, real estate, and sales offices. I traveled 30 percent of the time to meet the sales force, the distribution and plant management personnel, and the customers—through all 48 contiguous states plus Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico.
