Lawyers as Leaders in the United States

M. Gerald Schwartzbach

Imagine a society without any principles to guide it. The result would be chaos. Such a society would certainly not be a civilized one. The sources of principles by which a society is to be guided may originate with religious leaders, philosophers, and civic leaders, among others. How are such guiding principles to be formalized? How are determinations to be made whether conduct is consistent with or in violation of these principles? What are the consequences of violating these principles? Where, if at all, does a legal system fit in these equations?
