As a child spending a month every summer with my maternal grandparents, one of my favorite things to talk about with my grandmother was what it was like when she was a little girl. Year after year, I never got tired of looking at a large box of black-and-white photos that told the story of where I came from. There were pictures of my great-grandparents and the extended family that I never met. On balmy summer days I would take out the box of pictures and sit on the couch with my grandmother, asking her questions about the people in the photos.
