Family Business: New Strategies and Tools for the 21st Century
Scott E. Friedman, William Parizeau, and Cheryl Jankowski will be addressing new strategies for family businesses, including how professionals can more effectively collaborate in working with their family business clients. The presentation will cover insights from Friedman's new book, Family Business and Positive Psychology: New Planning Strategies for the 21st Century, and will describe how insights from science (particularly evolutionary biology and positive psychology) can help lawyers better appreciate the challenges they face in working with their family business clients as well as new strategies they can use to provide more effective representation.
This presentation will examine such factors as a negative work culture, the frequent subordination of "fit" (happiness) to "convenience," unprincipled decision-making, insular perspectives, a limited repertoire of techniques to prevent and manage conflict, and technically designed estate, retirement, and wealth management plans that ignore family dynamics. The panel will also offer suggestions on how to address these challenges along with strategies to enhance collaboration among the team of professionals serving the family business client. Friedman is the Managing Partner of Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman LLP, a Buffalo, New York based law firm; Parizeau is Vice President and Managing Director of Wilmington Trust, and Jankowski is a Principal with Chiampou Travis Besaw & Kershner, a Buffalo, New York based accounting firm where she specializes in tax planning for closely held businesses and their owners, focusing on estate and trust planning techniques.
Speakers: Scott E. Friedman, Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman LLP, Buffalo, New York; Cheryl Jankowski, Chiampou Travis Besaw & Kershner LLP, Amherst, New York; Will Parizeau, Wilmington Trust, Boston, Massachusetts
