New ABA Website, New Division URL

The American Bar Association now has a modern, unified web presence at a new address: www.americanbar.org. The new and improved website includes a fresh overall design as well as improved functionality that offer simpler navigation, better search capabilities, and enhanced interactive features.

“Designed as a powerful tool for members and the public to contact and interact with the ABA, the new website will improve the ABA’s value and visibility,” announced ABA President Stephen N. Zack.

Thursday, August 4

Joint Reception
7:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Hockey Hall of Fame, 30 Yonge Street

Join us as we kick off the ABA Annual Meeting with a joint reception at the Hockey Hall of Fame with the Section of Family Law, Section of Science and Technology Law, Law Practice Management Section, and Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. You will enjoy food, drinks, and interactive entertainment while you meet new friends and reconnect with old ones. The Law Practice Management Section will present its Sam Smith Award. And don’t forget your camera—you can take pictures with the Stanley Cup or purchase your professional pictures in the gift shop. And while you are there, you will have the opportunity to buy a souvenir, anything from a key chain, to your favorite team’s hockey puck, to a sports jersey. SoloDay: Best of GPSolo National Solo & Small Firm Conference, Part 1

Every year, the GPSolo Division hosts the National Solo & Small Firm Conference (NSSFC). The four best programs from NSSFC 2009 and NSSFC 2010 will be reprised here in this two-part seminar.

Turning Good Intentions into Good Actions: Examining and Eliminating Bias

This program will address the unexamined and blatant bias we all have and what lawyers can do to eliminate bias in the workplace and among their colleagues and clients.

Keithe E. Nelson Memorial Military Law Luncheon
12:15 pm – 1:45 pm

This biannual luncheon, in honor of the late Keithe E. Nelson, Major General, USAF, a former Judge Advocate General of the Air Force, has become a forum for presentations by distinguished speakers on military law subjects. The event is sponsored by the Division’s Military Law Committee.

Do-It-Yourself Historical Trial: Louis Riel Treason Trial—Traitor, Patriot, or Insane?

Lawyer Louis Riel was the founder of Manitoba, a leader of the Métis indigenous people, and an elected member of Canada’s Parliament. In 1885, in one of Canada’s most famous trials, he was tried and hanged for treason. Was he really a patriot, a traitor, or criminally insane? Join the prosecution or defense team and argue the case yourself, using the latest in modern litigation techniques and technology.

Back to Basics: Bankruptcy Basics, Statutory and Case Law Updates and Overview
8:30 am – 10:00 am

This introductory seminar is designed for lawyers new to bankruptcy law or for those wanting an update of current case law and statutory changes in the field, including the new technical corrections bill pending in Congress.

How Good Is the Dirt? The Skinny on Title Issues and Legal Descriptions
8:30 am – 10:00 am

With the growing number of real estate defaults, it is becoming critical that finance and banking lawyers understand how to review title, surveys, and legal descriptions to confirm the enforceability of their loan documents, and for those representing debtors to identify errors therein. This program will instruct lawyers on how to interpret the “foreign language” in which legal descriptions are written, walk them through how to read a survey, and explore the intricacies exposed in real estate title reports and insurance commitments.

Elder Law, Estate Planning, and Probate: New Ideas to Expand and Excel Your Practice
2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Learn from nationally recognized experts on using new techniques to improve service to elder law and estate clients. Topics will include getting referrals from other professionals; the aftermath of the Terri Schiavo case and living wills; forms you can use; e-mail newsletters; how to manage telephone conversations with your clients; marketing with written fee agreements; and ethics and marketing without violating the Rules of Professional Conduct. Forms and briefs will be provided to all attendees.

Export Law 101
2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

This program offers a brief introduction into the basics of the law of exporting goods and services from business in the United States to other countries.

Advising the Small Business
2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

This program is designed to instruct lawyers on how to decide which types of entities their small businesses should form, what documentation and rules apply to the different entity types, and what issues arise in multiple-owner entities and in raising capital for same. Materials will include sample forms and sample correspondence for business lawyers.

Solo and Small Firm Lawyers Caucus Breakfast
7:30 am – 9:00 am

This annual event, an ABA membership initiative for solo and small firm practitioners, is chaired by the Division’s Vice Chair and co-chaired by its three Division Delegates to the House of Delegates.
