ART Town Hall: New Michigan Surrogacy Law

Presented by: Stephanie Jones, Courtney Joslin, and Polly Crozier

"Positive State Action Post LePage, the Alabama IVF Case"

This presentation addresses the Michigan Family Protection Act which was signed on April 1, 2024, and is a major victory for reproductive rights, children, and families in Michigan. Speakers include Stephanie Jones, the founder of the Michigan Fertility Alliance, which is the grassroots group that led the campaign for parentage equality in the state, as well as co-drafters of the legislation, Polly Crozier, Director of Family Advocacy at GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, and Professor Courtney Joslin of UC Davis Law School and reporter for the Uniform Parentage Act of 2017. The Michigan Family Protection Act ensures that children born through assisted reproduction and surrogacy have equal access to the protections of legal parentage and also revokes the nation's last criminal ban on surrogacy contracts. This presentation provides an overview of the new law as well as insights into the state legislative process for those working on equality efforts in their states.
