During the ABA Section Officer Conference’s Fall Leadership Meeting in September, leadership from ABA's sections, divisions, and forums spoke about the importance of providing members opportunities to network and to build community. This conversation reminded me that I had never really considered these as separate things until law school. Both involve connecting with people in a meaningful way, but they are slightly different.

Networking often refers to building contacts and maintaining professional relationships with individuals who can provide opportunities for career development and business opportunities. On the other hand, building community focuses on making connections for mutual support, cooperation, and shared goals and interests.

During law school, I relied on both networking for my professional development and a close-knit community for trust and personal support. I needed both not just during law school but in the years that followed. That is why I'm committed to ensuring this Section continues to provide opportunities for meaningful connection.

Throughout the year, Section members have the opportunity to engage during virtual and in-person events, including our Fall Conference in October, the Environmental Justice Symposium in November, and the excellent Community Conversations and CLE webinars provided by our 24 substantive committees.

If you are not already a member of one of our committees, I encourage you to join. Visit our committees website landing page to learn more. And keep an eye on our Section event's page as new programs are added often.

Whether your focus is on expanding your professional network, building your community, or both, this Section is committed to providing you with a wide range of opportunities designed to foster connections for professional development, personal growth, and meaningful collaboration.
