It is fitting that the symbol for Atlanta is the phoenix. Like the mythical bird that is cyclically reborn from ashes, Atlanta’s history is marked by an ability to rise above challenges and emerge stronger and more resilient than before. From being reduced to ashes during the Civil War to becoming the economic hub of the Southeastern United States, from segregation and Jim Crow to the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement, from a railroad terminus to the most-traveled airport in the world—our progress has been hard-fought but always strongest when built together.
