Introduction to Non-Targeted Chemical Analysis and Implications in Environmental Law

Kirk O'Reilly

Regulatory oversight of chemicals in the environment has been historically based on targeted chemical analysis. A generally applicable or site-specific target list of chemicals is identified as requiring monitoring. These chemicals are analyzed using preapproved analytical methods, conducted by certified laboratories to measure concentrations within reasonable levels of certainty. While detection limits continue to decrease as analytical methods and equipment become more sensitive, the basic framework for targeted analysis remains the same.
