Natural Resources & Environment (NR&E) is the premier publication and member benefit of the ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources. Published quarterly, by season, each issue includes nine to ten feature articles reflecting the issue's given theme. Calls for Article Proposals are announced approximately eight months in advance of the publication date. Section members are given preference in the article proposal consideration process.

Call for Article Proposals: Marine & Coastal Law (Spring 2021)

The ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources’ magazine Natural Resources & Environment will devote its Spring 2021 issue (35:4) to articles on Marine & Coastal LawNR&E editors seek articles that explore developments, challenges, and controversies in the law and regulation of the ocean and the coasts. NR&E editors are interested in proposals that address federal, state, tribal, and international laws and policies—including statutes, regulations, common law, and treaties—as well as articles that examine this topic in the context of litigation and disputes in international tribunals.

Suggested topics for the “Marine & Coastal Law” (Spring 2021) include, but are not limited to:

  • Offshore wind/oil and gas
  • Impacts of COVID-19 on fisheries management
  • Vessel pollution and force majeure during COVID-19
  • Magnuson-Stevens Act
  • Acidification
  • Coastal Zone Management Act 
  • Plastics
  • Oil spills
  • Cruise ships
  • Transboundary pollution
  • Coral reefs
  • UNCLOS
  • Marine mammals
  • Aquaculture
  • Public trust
  • Beach contamination/renourishment/erosion

We are currently soliciting authors to contribute articles to this issue.

Authors should use this online form to submit a proposal, including full contact information and their professional employment, position, or affiliation. Upon completion, be sure to click on the “submit” button at the bottom right on the form. Submitted forms are transmitted directly to the Issue Editor (below). The editors seek articles covering a diverse range of topics written by a diverse range of authors. In selecting authors, strong preference will be given to Section members.

Article proposals are due by July 17, 2020.

Article selections will be made and authors will be notified July 27. Article outlines are due by August 24, 2020, and initial article drafts are due by September 22, 2020. Authors will work with an editor from the NR&E Board throughout the publication process and will be assigned a specific word count limit. The word limit assigned to NR&E articles is typically 4,000 words. Articles should be written in magazine style (citations in text; no footnotes). NR&E article guidelines can be found here.
