In the bare-knuckles brawl of competition for water in the western United States, is there room for truly collaborative projects? A study recently completed on the South Platte River in Colorado suggests that opportunities for cooperation exist and that a major collaborative water supply project is feasible. While significant challenges remain before the project becomes reality, the diverse group of stakeholders that came together to participate in the study clearly shows promise. As westerners deal with ever-tightening water budgets and climate impacts, the study highlights a growing trend towards cooperation in water supply management and planning.
