Resilience in the Utility Industry: Working Against the Rising Tides

As major storms become more intense and more frequent and resulting power outages threaten the reliability of essential public services, the utility industry and regulators increasingly recognize the need to rethink electric transmission and distribution system infrastructure design and to “harden,” or better secure, that infrastructure. From the coastal areas of Louisiana to metropolitan New York, utilities are proposing—and regulators are approving—massive investments in utility infrastructure designed to thwart the reliability impacts of ever-worsening storms.
