Measuring how much nature is worth to a company, community, or the world is a daunting task—and often, the tremendous importance and economic value of a benefit provided by nature is appreciated only after it is no longer available. In January 2011, The Dow Chemical Company and The Nature Conservancy agreed to an unprecedented collaboration—they embarked on a unique experiment that, by examining how Dow’s operations rely on and affect nature, will build a roadmap for how companies assess, incorporate, and invest in nature and the benefits it provides.
