ABA CDSV/NCALL Abuse in Later Life Webinar Series

The National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL) and the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence have created a 5-part webinar series on Abuse in Later Life for civil attorneys, legal advocates and others who wish to gain a deeper understanding of Abuse in Later Life (ALL). The primary focus of these webinars will be addressing the needs of older victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. This series is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). There will be no cost for webinar participants.

Part I: Abuse in Later Life Overview

  • Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at 12:00 pm EST

This overview will include information around what Abuse in Later Life (ALL) is, as well as information about who perpetrates ALL, common abuser motives, and information about the factors and dynamics that can underlie that abuse.  During today’s module, you will also have the opportunity to view video interviews with victims of abuse in later life  in which they discuss their experience with abuse, as well as the barriers and challenges they experienced trying to live free from abuse. In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn how to locate your state’s statutes related to elder abuse.

Part II: Forming the Relationship with Your Client

This webinar will take an in depth look at forming the relationship with your client. Participants will be able to use a victim-centered approach to identifying potential ALL clients and navigating challenges to client communication (including accessibility and cultural barriers), describe boundaries of privilege and confidentiality and potential challenges presented by mandated reporting, and develop a victim-centered advocacy and lawyering approach to representing clients who are experiencing ALL.

Part III: Client Goal-Setting and Non-Litigation Responses.
