Webinar Addressing Motherhood and Caregiving Bias in the Legal Profession Held July 28

The Commission on Women in the Profession (CWP) hosted a webinar on July 28, 2021, titled “Addressing Motherhood and Caregiving Bias in the Legal Profession: Dismantling the Systemic Barriers to Equity.” This program answered three questions: What is the motherhood/caregiving penalty? Why is it still not recognized despite the value in weaving the human condition of caregiving into organizational culture? How do organizations implement procedures and decision-making for institutional change in the legal profession to ensure the success of mothers and caregivers? Panelists participated in a lively discussion about dismantling the systemic barriers to equity and the perpetuation of bias, using an intersectional approach. Moderating the program was Roberta “Bobbi” Liebenberg, partner, Fine, Kaplan and Black; principal, The Red Bee Group; and a former CWP chair. Panelists included Michelle Browning Coughlin, general counsel and VP of legal affairs, El Toro IP Targeting; founder and president, MothersEsquire, and CWP commissioner; Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO, National Women’s Law Center, and past CWP commissioner; Hon. Peter M. Reyes Jr., judge, Minnesota Court of Appeals, and CWP commissioner; and Stephanie Scharf, partner, Scharf Banks Marmor LLC; principal, The Red Bee Group; and a former CWP chair. This webinar was free to all.
