Join Us for the August 7, 2022, Margaret Brent Awards Ceremony

By Maureen Mulligan

After two years of wonderful celebrations for the Commission’s Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Awards honorees through our online platform, I am excited to announce that this year we will celebrate in person!

Congratulations to the 2022 Margaret Brent recipients:

  • Michele Goodwin—chancellor’s professor, University of California, Irvine School of Law; senior lecturer, Harvard Medical School; host of On the Issues with Michele Goodwin at Ms. magazine; Laguna Beach, CA
  • Christina L. Martini—partner and global head of Trademark Prosecution and Controversy Practice, McDermott Will & Emery; Chicago, IL
  • Laura J. Schumacher—vice chair, external affairs, and chief legal officer, AbbVie; North Chicago, IL
  • Myra C. Selby—partner, Ice Miller; Indianapolis, IN
  • Wendy Shiba—retired executive vice president, general counsel, and secretary of KB Home; principal, the Red Bee Group; Altadena, CA

As you are planning your trip to the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago, keep in mind that our celebration will take place on a Sunday as usual—August 7, 2022. But please note the time change. This year, the award ceremony will begin at 3:00 p.m. CT, with a reception immediately following the ceremony—all concluding by 5:30 p.m. This will allow all of us to meet the Margaret Brent honorees and also visit with the many friends who attend the awards ceremony. We’ll have the chance to greet each other, catch up, and raise a glass to toast our terrific honorees. I cannot wait to honor these amazing women along with you. So, whether you are a veteran attendee at the Margaret Brent Awards ceremony or a newcomer, please join us. If you are a senior lawyer or a young lawyer, we want to meet you!

I could not be prouder of what this year’s Brent honorees have accomplished. They lead by example and open doors for other women. They create community.

I am writing this chair’s column during Women’s History Month. I have celebrated Women’s History Month each day by reading an article or book chapter about a woman who has changed the path for other women, in leading by example. The Margaret Brent honorees join these women. On August 7, we will hear their stories, honor their accomplishments, and thank them for their leadership. Please join us.
