In Memoriam

Shirley Hufstedler, a groundbreaking former federal judge and Education Department secretary, died on March 30, 2016. In 1968, when President Lyndon Johnson appointed her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, she was one of the first women to sit on the federal bench. She served for 11 years before accepting President Jimmy Carter’s invitation to join his cabinet as the first secretary of the new U.S. Department of Education.
