Gender diversity on the Indiana bench has leaped forward. The state gained its first female bankruptcy judge when Judge Robyn Moberly was sworn in on March 8 to fill a vacancy on the bankruptcy court for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Judge Moberly was a long-time trial court judge (serving on the Marion Superior Court since 1996), as was Judge Loretta Rush before she took her seat on the Indiana Supreme Court, the state’s highest court, on December 28, 2012. Justice Rush is only the second woman to be appointed to the Indiana Supreme Court. Indiana has now left Idaho and Iowa as the only states without a woman on the state’s highest court. This follows on the heels of the appointment of Indiana’s first African American federal district judge, Tanya Walton Pratt, who took her seat on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana in 2010.
