Daniel Inouye

(1924-2012) -Attorney, U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative

Daniel Inouye served as President portempore of the U.S. Senate, making him the highest ranking Asian American politician in U.S. history, until Kamala Harris assumed the Office of the Vice President. Following WWII, he practiced law in Hawaii before entering territorial politics in 1954. He was the first Japanese American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. He served as U.S. Senator from Hawaii from 1963-2012. For his combat heroism, which cost him his right arm, Inouye was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart with Cluster. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, becoming the first and only senator to receive both the Medal of Freedom and the Medal of Honor.
