South Carolina

Diversity Committee

From highlighting diversity efforts with our Diversity Spotlight Series, to bringing national experts to the Bar Convention to get real about historical discrimination and where we are as a profession, to providing resources for attorneys and law firms on our webpage, we are working hard to fulfill our mission: to promote full and meaningful participation in the legal profession in South Carolina by people of diverse backgrounds.

Elder Law Committee

The Elder Law Committee provides education to members of the Bar and the public on issues affecting the elderly and those with disabilities, monitors legislation and proposes statutory changes.

South Carolina Women Lawyers Association

Founded in 1993, the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association (SCWLA) was formed in order to support female attorneys practicing in South Carolina. This commitment to furthering women in the legal profession is exemplified by the SCWLA’s first action as an organization, which was to ratify the filing of an amicus brief done on its behalf in a case where female defense counsel was appealing for a new trial due to the patronizing comments made by the trial judge about the female attorney handling the case. The South Carolina Women Lawyers Association encourages its members to continue this legacy of aiding women attorneys to advance in South Carolina’s legal profession on an individual level by recognizing women that help female lawyers in their careers with the Jean Galloway Bissell award. The SCWLA dedicates itself to maintaining a strong community of women lawyers in the state. An important way that the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association keeps its members connected is by hosting several social events each month, such as wine tasting and 5k fun runs. Attorneys that belong to the SCWLA are able to advance their professional careers by attending the many continuing legal education courses that the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association arranges for its members, including the occasional free seminar.
