Women in the Profession Section

The Women in the Profession Section's primary objectives are: To assess the current status of women in the legal profession and to identify career paths of women attorneys and their goals; to identify barriers that prevent women attorneys from full participation in the work, the responsibilities and the rewards of the profession; to assess quality of life issues in the profession which affect both male and female attorneys; to identify unique problems encountered by women attorneys in pursuing their professional careers and to make recommendations to the Board of Commissioners regarding women in the profession.

Local Bar Associations

Mississippi Women Lawyers Association

Mississippi Women Lawyers Association (“MWLA”) is comprised of women representing all facets of the legal profession including private, corporate, and government practice, judiciary, academia, and law students. MWLA was founded in 1976 by a group of thirty women attorneys from throughout the State of Mississippi to enhance and develop the image of lawyers in Mississippi, promote fellowship among the members of the legal community, and advance women in the legal profession. Today, there are approximately 1500 women lawyers practicing in Mississippi in all sectors of the profession, many of whom are members of MWLA. Community involvement and philanthropy are significant parts of MWLA’s involvements. The Association emphasizes the importance of the attorney’s role in giving back to the community through projects that benefit charitable organizations, the provision of scholarships to outstanding law students, and pro bono work. The Association also awards the Martha Gerald/MWLA scholarship in honor of MWLA’s first president, Martha Gerald, to female law students at the University of Mississippi School of Law and the Mississippi College School of Law.

Mound City Bar Association

Mound City Bar Association is the oldest African-American bar association west of the Mississippi River. It was organized as the St. Louis Negro Bar Association on January 7, 1922, at a time when black lawyers were not allowed to join the all-white St. Louis Bar Association. Our objectives are to advance the professional interests of our members; to improve the administration of justice; to uphold the honor of the legal profession; to promote the professional development of our members; and to provide service to the community, including pro-bono representation.

Mound City Bar Association is a 501(c)(6) organization comprised of lawyers, judges, paralegals, and law students who advance the legal profession through active community participation, real mentoring, and offering professional development opportunities to our members. We are an affiliate, partner, and active participant of the National Bar Association. Mound City Bar Foundation is our separate 501(c)(3) organization and the charitable arm of Mound City Bar Association. Our Association and Foundation work hand-in-hand to raise funds and award scholarships to law students, among other charitable endeavors.
