Preview: DEI Events at the ABA 2023 Midyear

During the ABA 2023 Midyear meeting, please be on the lookout for the below diversity, equity, and inclusion-related events. 

As a reminder, the Midyear meeting will run February 1-6, 2023, in New Orleans, LA.

Thursday, February 2, 2023

  • The ABA Council for Diversity in the Educational Pipeline will be hosting the Judicial Clerkship Program. This program is a joint effort of the ABA Council for Diversity in the Educational Pipeline and the ABA Judicial Division with the generous support of LexisNexis®. The program is designed to bring judges and underrepresented law students together through structured networking and educational activities that encourage them to apply for judicial clerkships. 

Friday, February 3, 2023 

  • ABA Council for Diversity in the Educational Pipeline continues the Judicial Clerkship Program.
  • The ABA Commission on Women in the Profession will host the Free Present and Powerful Speaker Series: “The Future is Now: A Conversation with Donna Brazile.” This event will be held from 4-5:30pm at the Sheraton New Orleans.
  • The Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession will host a Joint Diversity Reception with the Pipeline Council. The reception will award the Pipeline Council’s Alexander Awards and recognize CREDP’s Spirit of Excellence honorees. This event will be from 6-8pm.

Saturday, February 4, 2023

  • ABA Council for Diversity in the Educational Pipeline continues the Judicial Clerkship Program.
  • The Hispanic Commission on Legal Rights & Responsibilities will host the Legal Summit of the Americas, which will include two CLE programs to address immigration and environmental issues. This event will be from 8:30-11:30am. 
  • The Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession will host the Spirit of Excellence Awards and luncheon. The Spirit of Excellence Awards annually celebrates the efforts and accomplishments of lawyers and judges who work to promote a more racially and ethnically diverse legal profession. Awards are presented to those who excel in their professional settings; who personify excellence on the national and international level; and who have demonstrated a commitment to racial and ethnic diversity in the legal profession. This event will be from 12-2pm.
  • The Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity will host the Stonewall Awards. The Stonewall Award recognizes those lawyers, members of the judiciary and legal academia who have effected real change to remove barriers on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression in the legal profession and the world, nation, state and/or locale, and to recognize those who have championed diversity for the LGBT community, including within the legal profession. This event will be held from 5:30-7:00pm.

  • ABA Council for Diversity in the Educational Pipeline continues the Judicial Clerkship Program.Legal Summit of the Americas
  • The ABA Commission on Women in the Profession will host the Women’s Caucus to the ABA House of Delegates from 11am-1pm. 
  • The Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession will host Racial and Ethnic Diversity Caucus to the ABA House of Delegates from 3-5:30pm.
  • The Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity will host the LGBT Caucus to the ABA House of Delegates from 2:30-4:30pm.
