Named for long-time Harvard Law School professor Frank Sander, the Frank E.A. Sander Innovation in ADR Award was established to recognize innovative methods and extraordinary achievements in the field of dispute resolution. The award is cosponsored by the ABA Center for Innovation and the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution.
The ABA recognized two individuals in the inaugural year of the award: Edith Primm of the Justice Center of Atlanta and Colin Rule of Tyler Technologies.
Edith Primm has been influencing cutting edge technology in the dispute resolution profession for decades. She serves as the Executive Director of the Justice Center of Atlanta and as a member of the Georgia Commission on Dispute Resolution. Edith continues to mentor a new generation of mediation professionals. Her latest research involves the potential benefits and pitfalls of implementing an online dispute resolution platform.
Colin Rule is a pioneer in integrating online dispute resolution (ODR) into the courts and legal service organizations. He has led the development and expansion of ODR since 1999, but over the past five years he has been a key driver behind international efforts to expand access to justice by integrating court ODR into the legal system. He has also helped to advance the theory and practice around ODR in the courts through his work with the National Center for Technology and Dispute Resolution and the International Council for Online Dispute Resolution.
