ABA Fund for Justice and Education

The American Bar Association Fund for Justice and Education (ABA FJE), the 501(c)(3) charitable fund of the Association, has many pro bono, public service, and education programs that improve access to justice.

PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES

Providing free, accessible legal advice for those in need.

92% of civil legal needs reported by low-income Americans receive insufficient or no help. Cost is most often the barrier, however, many struggle to access legal services due to geographic, transportation, or scheduling constraints. ABAFreeLegalAnswers.org provides legal guidance online at no cost to those in need. Over 10,000 volunteer attorneys stand ready to assist with employment, housing, family, consumer rights, and other civil legal matters.

CHILDREN'S RIGHTS

Improving legal systems that impact children and families.

More than 600,000 children spend time in foster care every year. Most children reunify with family, while others need legal assistance to navigate the complex child welfare system. The ABA Center for Children and the Law works tirelessly on legal advocacy and court improvements that reduce the need for and shorten the time spent in foster care. The Center develops legal solutions on a variety of topics that improve the outcomes for children and families.

Disaster Legal Services

Solving legal issues so survivors can rebuild from disaster.

Fires, floods, and hurricanes destroy communities and the legal crisis following the natural disaster can be just as devastating. The ABA Young Lawyers Division, in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, recruits and trains volunteer attorneys to operate a free legal services hotline in the aftermath of presidentially-declared disasters. For nearly 50 years, the ABA has helped disaster survivors rebuild their lives through access to legal services.
