Elevating Eldercare

One in 10 Americans who are 60 and older have experienced elder abuse and COVID-19 increased the number of cases of cruelty. On the matter of legal guardianship, some seniors who need additional care are having their rights denied. Too often courts appoint guardianships for seniors who could keep making their own decisions with appropriate support and services. The ABA Commission on Law and Aging promotes independence and protects the rights and dignity of seniors by educating judges, lawyers, and caretakers on alternatives like Supported Decision-Making and the unique legal challenges of aging.

Securing Safety

A key tactic of abusers is isolation. Being relegated indoors during the pandemic and limited access to services increased its effectiveness. The ABA Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence (CDSV) ensures survivors of gender-based violence are heard in the justice system. A national leader in the field, CDSV provides survivor resources and trains thousands of lawyers on trial skills, virtual litigation, protection orders, trauma-informed practices, and more to help survivors gain safety and ensures the legal system holds perpetrators accountable.

Voters' Voices Heard

Democracy succeeds when all voters can participate freely and easily. After the contentious 2020 elections, ballot access and community engagement are challenged as several states pass or consider restrictive voting laws. For example, one state may violate Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act “by improperly restricting what assistance in the polling booth voters, who have a disability or are unable to read or write, can receive.” The ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice is training lawyers and communities on current issues affecting elections and voting rights, and providing the roadmap for free, accessible, fair elections – where every vote counts.
