    The Power of Civics

    Civic Literacy Survey

    ABA Media Relations’ Survey of Civic Literacy, launched this year, measured the public’s knowledge of their rights and responsibilities in our democracy. This includes measuring their understanding of: their right to vote, the rule of law, as well as elements of the First Amendment and the Bill of Rights. The ABA Division for Public Education followed up on these results by setting up a free resource website for the public, including a quiz for the public to test their own knowledge and numerous educational resources on civic education. In recognition of the ABA’s 19th Amendment Centennial Commemoration, the 2020 Survey of Civil Literacy will include additional questions pertaining to citizens’ awareness of their rights as voters.

    Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100

    Law Day 2020

    Law Day is held on May 1st every year to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. The Division for Public Education provides planning guides, teaching resources, products, and other useful items to support Law Day. Law Day 2020 theme is Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100. In 2019-2020, the United States is commemorating the centennial of the transformative constitutional amendment that guaranteed the right to vote would not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex.

    Fair Elections and Voting Rights Initiative

    ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice

    The Fair Elections and Voting Rights Initiative will provide a wealth of knowledge and resources related to enhancing strategic efforts to protect voting rights and fair elections. This year, the Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice will devote two of its four Human Rights magazine issues to the topic, facilitate its annual State of Voting Rights, host a leader’s round table, and provide various Continuing Legal Education trainings.
